Important Information on Traveling to Lancaster

Please make your travel plans as soon as possible; the holidays are a very busy time for the travel industry and, typically, prices will become more expensive as fewer tickets are available.


Unless you are told otherwise, it is your responsibility to arrive in and depart from Lancaster as your final destination. Your host family will not meet you at either the Philad​elphia Airport or the Harrisburg Airport.  


There is no public transportation to Lancaster from the Harrisburg Airport; only the Philadelphia Airport.

Please plan to arrive between 8:00 in the morning and 8:00 in the evening, Eastern Standard Time.  


Please make your travel arrangements as soon as possible and share those plans with Deb Lorah.  If appropriate, Deb will let you know if other students have travel plans similar to yours, in case you might want to meet and travel together.

Traveling by Airplane

Students in the past have found the most cost effective way to get to Lancaster is to fly to Philadelphia International Airport (PHL).


After arriving at the airport, look for signs for SEPTA trains to Center City.  There are multiple SEPTA stations located throughout the airport complex, typically located near the baggage claim area.  


SEPTA is the local train service for travel within the Philadelphia area.  SEPTA does not provide transportation to Lancaster.


The SEPTA link below will show you a map of the airport and locations of SEPTA stations.  You will need a SEPTA ticket for the Center City bound train to the 30th Street Station.  The cost from the airport to the 30th Street Station is less than $10 one way.

After arriving at 30th Street Station, follow signs for Amtrak (located in the lower level).  


Amtrak will provide transportation from Philadelphia to Lancaster.

You will need a ticket to go to Lancaster (LNC). The cost from 30th Street Station to Lancaster is less than $20 one way.


Both SEPTA and Amtrak are trains.


SEPTA provides transportation within the Philadelphia area only. Lancaster is too far away from Philadelphia to have SEPTA service.


Amtrak provides train transportation between major cities in the United States. 


Amtrak will bring you to Lancaster where your host family will meet you.

Traveling by Train

Traveling by Bus

Host families are able to meet you at the Lancaster Train Station (which also serves as the bus station.)


Greyhound offers national bus service to Lancaster.
